March 10 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm CDT

Moral Injury & Recovery What can we do with Dr. Carrie Cole

Moral Injury and Recovery: What Can We Do? | Healing a Soul Wound

While the term moral injury has become more widely used in the last decade, many still don’t understand what this type of injury looks like, and how it can impact an individual, a relationship, and a family.

A moral injury is a crisis in identity and life purpose that comes from violating one’s core values in a high-stakes situation. It is a major form of suffering that involves guilt, shame, fury, humiliation, loss of meaning and relationships, emotional isolation, and despair or suicidality. As an affliction of conscience, it is not a mental health disorder, but it can occur with PTSD or other mental health conditions.

We will be joined by Dr. Rita Nakashima Brock, who will help us better understand moral injury, what’s being done to treat it, and what we can do to support a loved one.

What to Expect

  • Definitions: What is a Moral Injury?
  • Real-Life Examples: What does this look like in the military and veteran community?
  • Signs & Symptoms: Learn how to recognize a Moral Injury.
  • Strategies: What can you do to support your own recovery or that of a loved one?
  • Supports: Demonstration of a program developed by Volunteers of America.

Complement Peer Support Event

A complimentary peer support event will be offered for individuals to process what they learned and discuss how moral injury shows up in their families. Participants are encouraged to attend the EmpowerED and peer support events, but it is not required. Registration information for the event will be added here as details are solidified.
