SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Parenting Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Virtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding Trauma’s Impact on Parenting and Exploring Evidence-Based Solutions \n\n\n\nParenting in a military-connected family comes with unique challenges\, especially when navigating the effects of trauma and stress. This session uncovers the findings of a recently completed study that highlights the critical link between parental trauma\, mental health\, and child well-being.  \n\n\n\nExplore how these findings have shaped Parenting-STAIR (PSTAIR)\, an evidence-based\, trauma-informed intervention specifically designed for military-connected mothers. This 12-16 session program\, available for Texans in-person at select clinics and via telehealth\, offers an innovative approach to strengthening parent-child relationships and fostering resilience within military families. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Kathrine Sullivan is an Associate Professor at the New York University (NYU) Silver School of Social Work. Her research centers on the impact of trauma and other risk factors on family dynamics\, particularly in military families. As principal investigator on a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) funded study\, she leads the development of Parenting-STAIR\, a trauma-focused parenting intervention tailored for military-connected mothers and their children. Dr. Sullivan’s work is published in leading journals\, including Child Maltreatment\, Family Process\, Journal of Family Psychology\, and JAMA Pediatrics. Before earning her PhD at the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work\, she spent six years as a community mental health clinician supporting children and families who had experienced trauma. Dr. Sullivan’s teaching and research are deeply informed by these clinical experiences. \n\n\n\nNYU Silver School of Social Work is a premier locus for research and education of professional social workers. Founded in 1960\, NYU Silver is renowned for its strong tradition of clinical excellence\, dedication to social justice\, and innovative teaching\, which prepare graduates for careers of meaningful impact. Scenarios and exercises make the learning practical\, so you leave ready to help in real-life situations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Conversations on Access to Lethal Means (CALM Conversations)\n\n\n\nCALM Conversations offers practical tools for discussing safe storage of lethal means\, like firearms or medications\, during a suicidal crisis. This course empowers everyday people to have respectful\, life-saving conversations that can reduce the risk of suicide by putting time and space between a person in crisis and lethal means. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat You'll Gain\n\n\n\n\nPractical skills to recognize and respond to mental health or substance use challenges in adults\n\n\n\nTools for tough conversations around suicide risk and lethal means\n\n\n\nStrategies that save lives by reducing access to lethal means during times of crisis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCertifications & CEUs\n\n\n\nUpon completion\, this session qualifies for continuing education units (CEUs) and professional certifications: \n\n\n\n\nMental Health First Aid (MHFA): 3-year certification | 7.5 CEUs\n\n\n\nCounseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM): 1-year certification | 1.5 CEUs\n\n\n\n\nTo request your certificate and a CEU submission form for state certification\, please email us after attending the training. \n\n\n\nPlease note: This training includes 2 hours of required self-paced pre-course work prior to the live session. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Event is Open To\n\n\n\nThis event is open to individuals nationwide.
