Safety Planning Intervention is a free\, four-hour interactive training that equips you with practical tools to support safety and well-being at home and in your community. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you’ll learn about safety planning intervention—a simple\, evidence-based approach designed to prevent suicide by reducing immediate risks and offering clear\, actionable steps to follow during a crisis. You’ll gain skills to recognize signs of crisis and create a personalized\, step-by-step safety plan for yourself or someone else. \n\n\n\nThrough real-life examples and hands-on activities\, we’ll guide you through the seven key components of a safety plan: \n\n\n\n\nWarning Signs: Recognize the thoughts\, feelings\, or situations that signal a potential crisis.\n\n\n\nCoping Strategies: Explore activities that can help manage emotions and provide relief in tough moments.\n\n\n\nSocial Support: Identify trusted people who can offer connection\, distraction\, or care.\n\n\n\nProfessional Resources: List contacts for therapists\, crisis lines\, or emergency services.\n\n\n\nSafe Environments: Learn how to limit access to items that could be harmful in a crisis.\n\n\n\nReasons for Living: Reflect on personal sources of meaning and motivation.\n\n\n\nCommitment to Safety: Understand how to support someone’s intent to stay safe and use the plan.\n\n\n\n\nThis training helps you respond with clarity and confidence when it matters most. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Safety Planning Intervention\n\n\n\nSafety Planning Intervention provides practical tools to support someone in crisis using  an evidence-based approach to reduce risk and promote well-being. You’ll be responsible for submitting the form to your state or licensing board for CEU credit approval. \n\n\n\n\nHow should I prepare for the event?\nFor the best experience\, we recommend joining from a quiet\, distraction-free space and arriving on time\, as participants who join more than 15 minutes late may not be admitted. Be sure to have your Zoom link ready from your confirmation email. \n\n\n\n\nWhy can't I register for this event?\nYou must register at least 72 hours before an event. Most programs are ongoing series with multiple dates. Please check our calendar for upcoming sessions. \n\n\n\n\nDo I have to pay to attend?\nNo\, all events are completely free to attend. We are a grant-based program and believe in removing barriers to connection and support and are proud to offer these sessions at no cost to our community. \n\n\n\n\nDo I need to live in Texas to participate?\nNo—VSN is based at the University of Texas at Austin’s Institute for Military & Veteran Family Wellness\, but we are a nationwide network open to any military-connected individuals in the US and beyond.
