Mindi is an Air Force veteran spouse who has navigated the complexities of military life with resilience and determination. Her journey alongside her veteran, who served for 15 years and underwent 17 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, has shaped her perspective in profound ways. With a decade of marriage and eleven years of shared experiences, they now reside in the vast expanse of Alaska, where they cherish the company of their beloved fur children. As a dedicated dog mom who consciously chose not to have children, Mindi has encountered the isolating effects of her decision within the military community. Often feeling alienated amidst a culture that prioritizes “traditional families,” she found solace in focusing on her career and education. Currently, Mindi passionately serves as a middle school special education teacher, where she finds fulfillment in making a difference in the lives of her students. Her academic journey reflects her commitment to empowerment and inclusivity. With an undergraduate degree in life science and theater, Mindi pursued further education, obtaining a K-12 cross-categorical teaching credential, a master's in curriculum and development, and ultimately, a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Change. Her academic achievements fuel her passion for reaching out to those who feel marginalized or overlooked. Living far from friends and family in the lower 48, Mindi discovered the Veteran Spouse Network, a beacon of connection in the vast wilderness of Alaska. Through this community, she found validation and understanding, strengthening her resolve to ensure that everyone, especially those on the periphery, feels heard, valued, loved, and seen. Mindi's journey exemplifies resilience, empathy, and a profound commitment to building inclusive communities wherever life may lead.
