Veteran Family Transition Program

Holistic Transition Support

When a service member transitions out of the military, their family transitions alongside them. This transition is often marked by excitement and challenges associated with geographic relocation, career uncertainty, family reintegration, and the re-establishment of community and supports (to name a few). This unique experience faced by veteran families requires an equally unique and tailored set of supports.

The Veteran Family Transition (VFT) Program aims to meet this need, providing transitioning spouses, committed partners, and couples with a combination of educational seminars on key transition topics, peer support groups for spouses to process those transition stressors, and peer panels, where spouses can learn from those who have been there and done that.

Upcoming Events

To further our dedication to military families in transition, we have collaborated with The University of Texas Center for Professional Education in an exciting new initiative:  The University of Texas Oscar Mike (UTOM) Program. As military families are On the Move, transitioning from the military to new ventures, our partnership will help ensure a smooth transition, through both educational and career opportunities and holistic transition support for the entire family, offered through our Veteran Family Transition Program. You can learn more about the UTOM initiative by clicking the button below.

Interested in one-on-one peer support?

The VSN is now offering Resiliency Check-Ins, which provide you the opportunity to receive virtual one-on-one support from our VSN Peer Leaders. While this is not a substitute for clinical therapy, it gives you a chance to receive the one-on-one support that may not be possible in group settings. If you are a military/veteran spouse, partner, family member, or divorced or widowed from a service member or veteran, consider signing up today!

Spouses Transition Too (T2)

Our monthly Spouses Transition Too (T2) Chats bring together transitioning spouses/partners to share their often complex feelings associated with the transition process, including feelings of anticipation and excitement, along with stress and anxiety. Participants discuss resources and strategies they found helpful, or unhelpful, as they support each other in a casual, judgment-free environment.

These chats are led by peer volunteers who have already made the leap to civilian life. Our peer leaders lean on their experience as they build and shape conversations for each chat, while also encouraging participants to help develop new content, based on their experiences and support needs.

T2 Chats are designed for military and veteran spouses/partners whose service member is within two years of transitioning to civilian life and anytime post-service. Sign-up for our upcoming chats by visiting our events calendar

Become a T2 Chat Leader

Being a true peer-to-peer program, we cannot do this work without incredible and passionate volunteers to lead these groups. If you are a veteran spouse/partner who navigated the transition journey alongside your veteran and would like to volunteer to lead a virtual T2 Chat, we encourage you to apply to become a Veteran Family Transition Leader, to help support the T2 Chats. #CivLife Peer Panel

We know that the transition process can be overwhelming, with information coming at you and your partner from all angles. It can be difficult to navigate this, while also trying to determine which of the over 40,000+ military and veteran service organizations are best suited to help you and your family. Sometimes, you just need to hear from someone who’s been through it and can give you those real-time answers and share their experiences, tips, and tricks. The #CivLife Peer Panel provides a space to do just that!

The #CivLife Peer Panel lets you ask all your burning questions to veteran spouses who have been there and done that. They know the struggles and anticipation your family is facing as you create your new path in the post-service community and want to help.

Not sure how to help your veteran navigate the VA?  Curious about what your family’s medical care may look like post service?  Hoping to gain information on how to find friends and a community of support in your new area?  You name it, and it is on the table. There are no “dumb” questions here. To sign up for our next #CivLife Peer Panel, visit our events calendar.

Become a Peer Panelist

We are looking for veteran spouses/partners to serve on our #CivLife Peer Panels who come from different branches and have different separation experiences (retirement, medical separation, ETS/EAS, etc.). We do not expect our panelists to be content experts, and just ask that they come ready to share their experiences and give tips, tricks, and recommendations where they can.

If you are a veteran spouse/partner who navigated the transition journey alongside your veteran and would like to serve as a #CivLife Peer Panelist, we encourage you to apply to become a Veteran Family Transition Leader, to help support the #CivLife Peer Panels. Visit our Leadership Opportunities page to learn more about leader responsibilities and training, and apply today!
