Susan L. Ruiz is a proud Navy veteran and the spouse of a Navy veteran, currently residing in Hagerstown, Maryland. She understands firsthand the unique rhythm of military life, having met her current husband while they were both stationed at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. A mother of three adult sons and a daughter, Susan also brings a rich perspective from a previous marriage to a Vietnam veteran, which exposed her to the challenges of PTSD and its impact on family life. As a veteran spouse who has navigated separation, remarriage, and all the transitions in between, she is passionate about supporting others through their own complex, military-connected journeys.
As a Peer Leader with VSN, Susan draws on her varied lived experience to connect with participants in one-on-one settings and support group programs. Through her own story, she has gained a deep understanding of subjects like PTSD, substance misuse, and the need for mental health support within the veteran community. Susan is committed to creating a safe, empathetic space where participants feel comfortable sharing their stories, knowing they are being met with authentic connection and encouragement.
Susan’s dedication to peer support stems from her fundamental belief that resilience is a shared practice. She hopes that participants leave her sessions feeling validated, equipped with a stronger sense of self, and empowered to take the next healthy step in their personal wellness journey. Outside of VSN, Susan embraces a mindful approach to life; she enjoys reading, practicing spiritual wellness, and nurturing her love for education by continually learning new things.
With a PhD in Health Psychology and over two decades of experience in patient advocacy and healthcare education, Susan brings a wealth of professional insight to her peer role. Her background includes extensive work in supporting vulnerable populations and applying strong communication skills to solve problems and improve the patient experience. While this expertise enhances her ability to create a safe and empathetic space for participants, Susan’s role at VSN is first and foremost as a peer, grounded in authentic connection and shared experience.
