EmpowerEd: Domestic Violence Awareness

At over twice the national average, domestic violence, unfortunately, remains a prevalent and underreported issue within military and veteran families. This complex and layered issue is made only more complicated by military culture and mental health considerations. Some partners may find themselves socially isolated, financially controlled, and potentially facing emotional, physical, or sexual abuse within their relationship, or more broadly wondering if they are in fact in an abusive relationship.
This is an important safety issue, and this seminar will discuss the different forms of abuse, the power and control wheel, how to recognize behavioral trends of abuse within your relationship, as well as how to support a loved one who may be in an abusive relationship. We welcome Margarett Bassett, LPC-S, as our guest speaker this month. Margarett serves as the Director of Applied Research and Innovative Instruction for the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault at the University of Texas at Austin.
