EmpowerEd: Embracing Change – Understanding Grief Beyond Death
August 28 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm CDT
We all grieve. Often we may think the only time it is acceptable to experiece grief is when it is related to death. This EmpowerEd workshop, “Embracing Change: Understanding Grief Beyond Death” will support attendees' understanding of non-death and ambiguous loss as it relates to military and veteran family culture and experiences. Often misunderstood and unacknowledged, non-death loss can evoke a strong grief response and have a similar impact on our well-being as significant death loss. Attendees will walk away feeling empowered to explore and honor any and all significant losses in their lives. Tangible, life-sustaining coping strategies will be shared that support attendees' journey in moving forward from non-death grief and loss.
Welcome our guest speaker, Samantha Synett, who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Board-Approved Supervisor, and the owner of Sam Synett Coaching LLC, a trauma-informed life and business coaching and consulting practice based out of Waco, Texas. Sam also works as a private practice therapist and serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Steve Hicks School of Social Work. Having spent the first six years of her career working for UT Health San Antonio's STRONG STAR Research Consortium and later, the Department of Veteran Affairs Rocky Mountain MIRECC for Veteran Suicide Prevention, Sam is considered a national expert in treating combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder and prolonged grief disorder in the military population. Inspired by her late grandpa Harry, a Korean War Veteran, Sam is dedicated to addressing mental health stigma and improving access for care for service members, Veterans, and their families.
The EmpowerEd trainings/seminars are open to the wider military-affiliated community and are offered Free of charge. Encouraged participants include: the spouse or partner of an active duty service member or post-service veteran, a caregiver or divorced spouse from a veteran or active duty service member, or an active duty service member or veteran.
