EmpowerEd: The Power of Sleep

October 23 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm CDT

Sleep. It’s that thing we do every day that occupies about one-third of our lives, and it is literally one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. Anyone who’s ever slept poorly for a few nights in a row can attest to that. But for many, sleep is often the first thing to be sacrificed when juggling the many other demands of living. Culturally, we’ve even come to see sleep deprivation as some sort of symbol of strength, whereas our need for sleep is seen as a sign of weakness or laziness.

But here’s the truth: Sleep is a fundamental biological need. When we sacrifice sleep, our bodies, our brains, and our behavior suffer. On the flip side, getting healthy sleep is a cornerstone of healthy living. In short, sleep is good medicine for mind, body, and spirit.

We know sleep can be illusive and challenging in our veteran families and that is why we are so excited to welcome Dr. Wendy Troxel, a licensed clinical psychologist and internationally recognized sleep expert, to provide practical, concrete, and evidence-based strategies to maximize the quantity and quality of your sleep and she will answer those burning questions you may have about sleep. Through this talk, Dr. Troxel will demonstrate the vital importance of sleep for your health, well-being, and productivity and some small steps you can take to improve your overall sleep health.

Dr. Troxel is the author of the book “Sharing the Covers: Every Couple’s Guide to Better Sleep” which recently was named by the New York Times as one of the 7 Books for Better Sleep. Her research is regularly cited by the media, including CNN, NY Times, WSJ, the BBC, and ABC News, as well as top-tier medical journals. Dr. Troxel is a highly sought-after public speaker with 2 TEDx talks to her name. Her TEDx talk, “Why School Should Start Later for Teens, has over 2.5 million views and is at the forefront of national and international conversations concerning this topic. Dr. Troxel’s mission is to help people understand the power of sleep to support health, well-being, productivity, and relationships.
