My Journey: Domestic Violence within the Military/Veteran Community

October 28 @ 6:30 am 7:30 pm CDT

Listen and be Empowered by three VSN peer leaders that will speak out about their own experiences with domestic violence

At over twice the national average, domestic violence, unfortunately, remains a prevalent and underreported issue within military and veteran families. This complex and layered issue is made only more complicated by military culture and mental health considerations. Some spouses/partners may find themselves socially isolated, financially controlled, and potentially facing emotional, physical, or sexual abuse within their relationship, or more broadly wondering if they are in fact in an abusive relationship.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and at the VSN we want to raise awareness and empower our spouses/partners that have experienced domestic violence to speak out. Join VSN peer leaders, Heike Vargas, Alunya Clark and Tanya Mac as they open up and share their journey with domestic violence.

Each peer leader will share their personal story dealing with domestic violence. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, support each other, and walk away inspired to raise awareness about this issue and support those who may be facing abuse. Finally, know that you are not alone. Although the VSN does not offer clinical services, the VSN community is here to embrace, support, and offer referral services if you have or are currently facing domestic violence.

If you are currently in an abusive situation or want to support someone who is, please visit the National Domestic Violence Hotline where you can learn more about domestic violence, look up local resources, and safely chat 24/7 with advocates there to help you.

To be eligible for this group you must be the spouse or partner of an active-duty service member or post-service veteran, a caregiver, a widow/widower or divorced spouse from a veteran or active duty service member, or an active-duty service member or veteran.
