EmpowerEd: Child Traumatic Stress
July 23 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm CDT
Let's talk about the impact of military service and military and veteran family dynamics on our kids and their mental health.
Welcome Dr. Gregory Leskin this month as our EmpowerEd guest speaker. Dr. Leskin serves as the Director of the National Children’s Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) Military and Veteran Families and Children Program and the Academy on Child Traumatic Stress at UCLA/Duke University’s National Center for Child Traumatic Stress. This seminar delves into the unique challenges faced by children in military and veteran families, focusing on how parents can support these needs. Approximately two million children of U.S. military service members navigate stresses such as coping with combat deployments, frequent relocations, and adjusting to the physical and psychological injuries of a military parent. These stressors can continue to impact the family and child in post-service veteran life. The session will discuss strategies for parents to identify and address these challenges.
Key discussion points include applying evidence-based interventions tailored for veteran families and enhancing community engagement to improve access to mental health services. The seminar will also cover creating culturally responsive environments and promoting collaborative relationships between community providers, local veterans' services, and educational entities to foster referrals and integrated support. This approach aims to minimize care gaps and provide a comprehensive support system for the children and families of veterans.
There will be a peer support complement to this event on July 25, 2024 at 7 pm CT with VSN peer leader, Stephanie Smart, register HERE.
