Watercolor Wellness with VAT

June 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm CDT
The Veteran Spouse Network is excited to partner with Veteran Art Therapy, a nonprofit organization out of Hillsboro, Texas. Welcome Heidi Lowell, as the teacher for this event. Heidi started her career in art after reading a book called “The Artist's Way.” It was a deeply inspiring and healing life philosophy. She became an elementary school art teacher, and after a decade transitioned to being a working artist. She finds using watercolors to be a very restorative practice, because there is a constant balance between letting go, and creating structure. Her work is deeply inspired by her interest in the natural world and biology. Her work has been featured in Minted & West Elm, at Yellowstone Art Museum, Texas Children's Hospital and even on the cover of science magazines.
In Beginning Watercolors we will begin our class with techniques for grounding and practicing embodiment at the beginning of our time together. Art is an excellent tool for self-expression and self-reflection. We will learn to both play with the flow of the colors on the page, and create patterns. We will experiment with creating different patterns, textures, and using different brushes within the context of practicing mindfulness and creating a watercolor piece. Heidi will share her own watercolor art journaling practice.
Each participant will leave the class with a new confidence in their ability to paint with watercolors, as well as new tools for grounding and finding calm, some knowledge around art and its place in history as a tool of healing and for finding a deeper connection with self and others.
To be eligible for this group you must be the spouse or partner of an active duty service member or post-service veteran, a caregiver or divorced spouse from a veteran or active duty service member, or an active duty service member or veteran.
